How to use the GPA calculator
Add each course with its credit hours and the letter grade you received (or expect). Your term GPA updates instantly.
To get your cumulative GPA, enter your GPA and total credits from previous terms — these are on your transcript. If your school awards 4.3 for an A+, tick the option below the courses.
Formula
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + this term’s grade points) ÷ (previous credits + this term’s credits).
Frequently asked questions
Why does credit weighting matter?
A 4-credit course counts for more than a 1-credit course. An A in a 4-credit class and a C in a 1-credit class gives (4×4 + 2×1) ÷ 5 = 3.6, not the simple average of 3.0.
What are plus and minus grades worth?
On the common 4.0 scale a plus adds about 0.3 and a minus subtracts about 0.3: B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7. A+ is usually capped at 4.0, though some schools award 4.3.
What GPA is needed for honors?
It varies by school, but Latin honors commonly start around 3.5 (cum laude), 3.7 (magna cum laude) and 3.9 (summa cum laude). Dean’s List thresholds are often 3.5 per term.
Do pass/fail courses affect GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail and withdrawn courses typically carry no grade points, so leave them out. Check your school’s policy for failed pass/fail courses.
