How to use the PPF calculator

Enter how much you will deposit in your PPF account each financial year (₹500 minimum, ₹1,50,000 maximum). The interest rate is pre-filled with the current PPF rate; change it to test a different rate. Optionally extend the account in 5-year blocks after the 15-year maturity.

The projection assumes you deposit the full amount on or before 5 April every year, which earns interest for the whole year — the best strategy for PPF. Deposits made later in the year earn less, because interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month.

Formula

PPF interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited (compounded) once a year on 31 March. With a deposit before 5 April each year, the balance grows as:

Balanceₖ = (Balanceₖ₋₁ + D) × (1 + r)

which over 15 years equals the annuity-due formula:

F = D × [((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r] × (1 + r)
  • D = yearly deposit, r = annual PPF rate (7.1% → 0.071), n = years

Example: ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1% → about ₹40.68 lakh on ₹22.5 lakh invested. The calculation holds the rate constant; in reality it can change every quarter.

History & interesting facts

Did you know?

PPF has EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) status: deposits qualify for Section 80C (old regime), the interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free too. It is also protected from attachment by court decree for debts.

Fascinating facts

  1. 1

    The Public Provident Fund was launched in 1968 by the Finance Ministry’s National Savings Organisation to give self-employed people a provident-fund-like retirement scheme.

  2. 2

    You can make up to 12 deposits a year in any amounts, as long as the yearly total is between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000.

  3. 3

    Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, and loans against the balance from the 3rd to the 6th year.

  4. 4

    Only one PPF account is allowed per person (plus accounts on behalf of minors, within the same ₹1.5 lakh family limit for the guardian).

Frequently asked questions

What is the PPF interest rate now?

The PPF interest rate has been 7.1% per annum since April 2020 and was last confirmed at 7.1% for October–December 2025. The Ministry of Finance announces small savings rates every quarter, so check the latest notification.

How much will I get if I invest ₹1.5 lakh in PPF every year for 15 years?

At 7.1%, depositing ₹1,50,000 before 5 April every year for 15 years gives a maturity value of about ₹40.68 lakh. You invest ₹22.5 lakh and earn about ₹18.18 lakh of tax-free interest.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF is EEE: deposits up to ₹1.5 lakh qualify for Section 80C in the old tax regime, and both the interest and the maturity amount are fully tax-free. In the new regime there is no 80C deduction, but the interest and maturity remain tax-free.

Can I extend my PPF account after 15 years?

Yes. Within one year of maturity you can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh contributions (submit Form 4 to continue contributing). Without an extension request, the account continues without deposits and keeps earning interest.

What is the minimum and maximum PPF deposit?

The minimum is ₹500 per financial year and the maximum is ₹1,50,000. If you miss the minimum, the account becomes inactive and can be revived with a ₹50 penalty per missed year plus the arrears.

Can I withdraw money from PPF before 15 years?

Partial withdrawal is allowed from the 7th financial year, up to 50% of the balance at the end of the 4th year preceding the withdrawal year (or the preceding year, whichever is lower). Premature closure is allowed after 5 years only for specific reasons such as serious illness or higher education, with a 1% interest penalty.

Should I deposit in PPF before 5 April?

Yes. Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so a deposit made by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months of the financial year. Depositing in March instead loses almost a full year of interest on that amount.
