How to use the Tip calculator

Enter the bill amount, then pick a tip percentage with the quick buttons (10–25%) or fine-tune it with the slider. If you’re splitting the bill, set the number of people.

You’ll see the tip, the total and exactly what each person owes. Amounts are split to the cent, so if the total doesn’t divide evenly a few people pay one cent more — the totals always add up.

Turn on Round up total to round the bill up to the next whole dollar; the extra goes to the tip.

Formula

Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100

Total = Bill + Tip

Per person = Total ÷ Number of people (rounded to the cent)

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 18–20% now the most common for good service and 20–25% for excellent service. Many people tip at least 10–15% even when service is just okay, because servers often earn a low base wage.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette experts generally say to tip on the pre-tax amount. Enter the subtotal before tax as the bill to follow that rule, or the full total if you prefer to be more generous.

How do you split a bill with tip between friends?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does it in whole cents, so if the total does not divide evenly it tells you how many people should pay one extra cent to cover it exactly.

How do I quickly work out a 15% or 20% tip in my head?

For 10%, move the decimal point one place left ($64.00 → $6.40). Double it for 20% ($12.80). For 15%, add half of the 10% amount to itself ($6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60).

How much should I tip for delivery, takeout or a bar tab?

Common US guidelines are 15–20% for food delivery (often with a $3–5 minimum), 0–10% for takeout, and $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab at a bar. Customs vary by country — in much of Europe and Asia tipping is smaller or already included as a service charge.

Do I still tip if there is a service charge?

Check the receipt. If a service charge or gratuity (often 18–20% for large groups) is already included, an extra tip is not expected, though you can add a little for outstanding service.
