How to use the Grade calculator
List your graded work with each item’s weight (from your syllabus) and your score as a percentage. Your current weighted grade updates instantly.
Then enter how much the final exam is worth and the overall grade you want, and the calculator tells you the score you need on the final.
Weights don’t have to add up to 100 — your current grade is based only on the work entered so far.
Formula
Current grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weights)
Needed on final = (target × (Σ weights + final weight) − Σ(score × weight)) ÷ final weight
Frequently asked questions
What if the weights don’t add up to 100?
The current grade is normalised by the total weight you entered, so 20/35 gives the same result as 4/7. This is how your grade stands on the work graded so far. Once you add the final’s weight, the needed score uses the full course weight.
How do I work out what I need on my final exam?
Enter your scores so far with their weights, then the final exam’s weight and your target grade. The calculator solves for the final score that makes your weighted average equal the target.
What letter grade scale is used?
A common US scale: A 93+, A− 90–92, B+ 87–89, B 83–86, B− 80–82, and so on down to D− 60–62 and F below 60. Your school’s cut-offs may differ.
Can I enter points instead of percentages?
Convert each item to a percentage first (points earned ÷ points possible × 100), then use the item’s weight from the syllabus.
