How to use the GST calculator

Choose Add GST if your amount is the price before tax (you want the invoice total), or Remove GST if the amount already includes GST (you want the base price, e.g. from an MRP or a GST-inclusive quote). Pick the GST rate and whether the sale is within the same state or to another state.

For an intra-state supply the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST in a union territory). For an inter-state supply or imports, the full amount is charged as IGST.

Formula

Adding GST to a base price:

GST = Base × Rate ÷ 100 · Total = Base + GST

Removing GST from a GST-inclusive price:

Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100) · GST = Total − Base

Example: ₹1,180 including 18% GST → base ₹1,000, GST ₹180 (CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90). Note that removing 18% is not the same as taking 18% off the total: 18% of ₹1,180 is ₹212.40, but the GST inside it is ₹180.

Frequently asked questions

What are the GST rates in India now?

From 22 September 2025, under the GST 2.0 reform approved by the 56th GST Council, most goods and services fall into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for luxury and sin goods such as pan masala, aerated drinks and large cars. Essentials can be nil-rated, gold and silver stay at 3% and rough diamonds at 0.25%. The old 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged, though some items such as tobacco remain at 28% for now. Always check the rate for your specific HSN/SAC code.

How do I calculate GST from a total amount?

Divide the GST-inclusive amount by (1 + rate/100) to get the base price; the difference is the GST. For 18%: base = total ÷ 1.18. So ₹11,800 including 18% GST has a base of ₹10,000 and GST of ₹1,800.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally between the Centre (CGST) and the state (SGST) — 18% becomes 9% + 9%. For a sale from one state to another, the Centre collects the full rate as IGST and shares it with the destination state.

How much is 18% GST on ₹1,000?

GST is ₹180, so the total is ₹1,180. Within the same state that is ₹90 CGST and ₹90 SGST; across states it is ₹180 IGST.

Who has to register for GST?

Businesses supplying goods must register once their aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh a year (₹20 lakh in special category states); for services the threshold is ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special category states). Inter-state suppliers of goods and e-commerce sellers generally need to register regardless of turnover.

Is GST charged on MRP?

MRP in India is inclusive of all taxes, so GST is already inside the printed price. Use Remove GST on the MRP to see the base price and the tax component.
