Hours worked
How to use the Hours calculator
Enter the time you started and finished, and the total length of any unpaid breaks in minutes. The calculator shows the hours worked in both hours-and-minutes and decimal form (the format most timesheets and payroll systems use).
Add an hourly rate to see what the shift pays. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as overnight.
Formula
Hours worked = (End − Start, + 24 h if the shift crosses midnight) − Break. Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60, e.g. 7 h 45 m = 7.75 h.
Frequently asked questions
Does this support overnight shifts?
Yes — if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours. For example 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes = 0.25 h, 30 minutes = 0.5 h, 45 minutes = 0.75 h. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours.
Should breaks be deducted from hours worked?
Only unpaid breaks. If your lunch break is paid, enter 0 for the break so it is counted as worked time. Rules on paid and unpaid breaks depend on your country and employer.
