How to use the SIP calculator

Enter how much you invest every month, the expected annual return and how many years you plan to stay invested. The calculator shows the total you put in, the estimated gains and the final corpus, with a year-by-year growth chart.

Use annual step-up if you plan to raise your SIP each year as your salary grows — even a 10% step-up makes a large difference over 15–20 years. Tick adjust for inflation to see what the corpus would be worth in today's rupees.

Long-run returns of Indian equity indices have historically been around 11–13% a year over 15+ year periods, but they vary widely year to year. Debt funds have typically returned 6–8%. Use a conservative figure for planning.

Formula

Instalments are assumed to be invested at the start of each month (the convention most Indian AMC and broker SIP calculators use), compounding monthly:

FV = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
  • P = monthly SIP amount
  • i = monthly rate = expected annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100
  • n = number of instalments (years × 12)

Example: ₹10,000 a month at 12% for 10 years → FV ≈ ₹23,23,391 on ₹12 lakh invested. With a step-up, the instalment rises by the step-up % after every 12 instalments and each month is compounded individually. Inflation-adjusted value = FV ÷ (1 + inflation)^years.

Real mutual fund returns are not a fixed rate — NAVs move daily — so treat the result as an estimate, not a promise.

Frequently asked questions

Is SIP return guaranteed?

No. SIPs in equity or hybrid mutual funds are market-linked, so returns are not guaranteed and can be negative over short periods. The calculator uses a constant assumed return for illustration; actual returns depend on the fund and on market movements.

How much will ₹10,000 SIP be after 20 years?

At an assumed 12% annual return, a ₹10,000 monthly SIP for 20 years grows to about ₹99.9 lakh on ₹24 lakh invested. At 10% it would be about ₹76.6 lakh. With a 10% annual step-up at 12%, it reaches about ₹1.99 crore.

What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up (or top-up) SIP automatically increases your instalment by a fixed percentage or amount every year. Because the larger instalments still get many years to compound, a 10% yearly step-up can roughly double the final corpus over 20 years compared with a flat SIP.

How are SIP returns taxed in India?

For equity funds, gains on units held over 12 months are long-term capital gains taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year, and gains within 12 months are taxed at 20%. Each SIP instalment is treated as a separate purchase with its own holding period. Debt fund gains on units bought after 1 April 2023 are taxed at your slab rate.

What is a realistic SIP return rate to assume?

For diversified equity funds, many planners use 10–12% a year for 10+ year horizons; for hybrid funds 8–10%; and for debt funds 6–7%. Using a slightly lower rate than history gives a safer plan.

Is SIP better than a lumpsum investment?

A SIP spreads purchases over time (rupee cost averaging), which reduces timing risk and suits monthly income. A lumpsum invested early can earn more if markets rise steadily, because all the money is invested longer. Many investors use both.
